Welcome to the Firing Zone

An Israeli police officers waves a baton in front of the Al-Aqsa compound.

What is a firing zone?

In legal terms, a firing zone is used to describe firing ranges, security areas, and training areas for miliary personnel. In the context of Palestine, it is a way for the Israeli government to use their legal system to legitimize their illegal displacement of the indigenous Palestinians living in the Palestinian territories.

As with most of the tactics the Israeli government employs, this abuse of power is part and parcel of the gradual expulsion of the native residents of Palestine. Being that this page will focus on the ongoing atrocities the Palestinians are subjected to daily, it's only fitting that we use the legal practice weaponized against the Palestinians to describe their very struggle.

It's 2022, and we're still fighting for recognition

Land theft, settler colonialism, apartheid, ethnic cleansing, police brutality, forced displacement, and innumerable human rights violations. Pick whichever of those descriptions you think fits the situation best, but the issue will always boil down to a single fact: until the Palestinian plight is recognized and actively discussed, there will never be peace.

It's not complicated

You may have heard the phrase "it's complicated" when discussing the conflict. You may have even uttered those words yourself. However, neither the history nor the current state of affairs are complicated or remotely difficult to understand.

Rather, it's our internal biases that need to be deprogrammed. In order to look at the issue objectively, we must learn to disassociate criticism of Israel and Zionism from baseless accusations of "antisemitism." Once this is done, it's relatively easy to pick any point in the past 100 years of this conflict and immediately understand the underlying cause of this issue. This blog will seek to break down these issues so that they are both digestible and easy to reference.
